Established in 1991, the Alaska Commercial Fishermen’s Memorial recognizes the lives of people who work in the commercial fishing industry. Every year, the memorial hosts an event to dedicate new names on its wall. This event occurs on the first Saturday in May at 10:00 a.m. and includes a reading of each name on the memorial and a blessing of the commercial fishing fleet and other participating vessels.

Lasting for 30 to 45 minutes, the Blessing of the Fleet and Reading of the Names ceremony is broadcast by VHF Channel 10. All vessels participating in the event must appear near the memorial by 10:00 a.m. and be prepared to drive by the memorial if weather conditions permit. After the ceremony is completed, attendees are invited to a post-ceremony brunch provided by the Twisted Fish.

As of May 2017, the memorial holds the names of over 200 individuals. Among those, approximately 50 individuals have been lost or died at sea.
